Cattle breeding
Our cattle are almost all pure Aberdeen Angus with some Salers x females still in the herd. The herd stems from the continental x holstein and Aberdeen angus cross heifers (Sorbe Farm) purchased through the 90s and 2000s. These were crossed with a limousin bull McGregor's, Burnhead Reiko. These were crossed with again with a further breed (Salers) to produce Salers cross heifers. We made the full move the Aberdeen Angus in 2015. Since our first bull Lorabar Ralph, we have had a further three Lorabar bulls and Prince Carlisle, Mr Prince, and our new stock bull My Prince.
Our heifers calve-down at two years old with the first run of the bull being with the smallest of our bulls at the time. All our cattle calve at the grass with tagging, banding and immunising taking place in the rear of the quad bike outside in the fields. Cattle are at the grass from May until October. Cattle are then housed and fed a mixture of silage and concentrate over the winter.
