At the farm, we specialize in producing store lambs for resale in September. Our breeding ewes are all Scotch mule ewes that are run on from ewe lambs purchased at the end of summer. Ewe lambs are overwintered on pasture before being mated to the tup as gimmers in November the following year. Lambs are born over a 3-week period from the 10/11th April in the spring.

Ewe lambs: Neil McNicol (Fechan Farm), John & Jane Seaton (Knockewart) and Garpel Estates

This particular sheep had a dislocated leg. I was able to manipulate the upper and lower bones of the leg so that it was completely back to normal. Success!

Sheep are shorn at once a year, fleeces from fully-grown sheep tends to go for carpet making (and curtains). An increasing number of retailers are turning to lambs to lambs wool for winter jumpers. Wool is also being used in mattresses as a breathable fibre.

We are also thinking about getting cheviots for the hill!
